GoPro held an event this week in and around San Francisco to introduce the world to their latest creation, the GoPro HERO 3: Black Edition. Described by the company as the world’s first 4K-capable action cam and with the ability to shoot 1080p footage at 60fps, the GoPro 3 Black Edition looks unbeatable for action and extreme sports video production.
Camera Shooting modes
The GoPro Hero 3 Black features a whole host of shooting modes, starting at WVGA and topping out with a 4k cinema mode (15fps), the most useful and exciting of the bunch being 1080p at 60fps, 720p at 120fps and 2.7k at 30fps. The slow-motion possibility’s when using the 60 and 120fps should lead to some really breathtaking footage, while the 2.7k resolution provides the ability to stabilise shaky footage in post-production and still end up with 1080p footage.
Camera Design
The Hero3 is quoted as being 30% thinner and 20% lighter than its predecessor, which should make it even easier to squeeze into quirky and creative places for great video footage.
The cameras looks are definitely more functional than stylish, looking reminiscent of an old digital stills camera, although given that its primary use is as an action cam we can overlook this.
Connected Hero
One of the truly great features of the GoPro 3 is the built-in Wi-Fi and GoPro App, allowing you to not only control the camera but to use your phone or tablet as a monitor to see a live feed from the camera. The IOS version of the app is already available on the Apple App Store™ and an Android version will be hitting Google Play soon.
